STRAP END

Unique ID: DEV-68365A

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete copper alloy strap end from the Early Medieval period, dating to c. AD 750-1100.

The object is wedge shaped, tapering from its broad attachment end to a slender point. It is D-shaped in cross section, although at the attachment end the upper surface is missing, resulting in a flat appearance. A series of 12 grooves run across the object horizontally, before a possibly zoomorphic design involving two circles (possibly nostrils?) at the object's tip. There is a shallow impression running vertically along the length of the reverse, but it is otherwise undecorated.

A number of examples have been recorded on the database, including DOR-8C4CE4 and WMID-780817. This is an example of Thomas (2003) Class B, probably Type 1, which he dates to the later Early Medieval period.

It is 35.6mm long, 3.3mm wide, 2.1mm thick and weighs 2.06g.

Class: Thomas Class B
Sub class: Transverse grooved
