A group of fourteen copper-alloy farthing trade tokens issued by Nicholas Shepherd of Saxmundham, dating 1648-1674. Williamson 288-299. Diameters all between 14.73 and 15.88mm, weights between 0.63 and 1.28g-average weight c. 0.85-0.95g.
Obverse: NICHOLAS SHEPHERD, the Draper's arms
Reverse: IN SAXMUNDHAM DRAPR, initials N M S in triangle within inner pelleted border
Trade tokens were first issued in 1648 as a response to the lack of small change. They were suppressed in 1674 under Royal Authority.
