Object type certainty: Certain

A complete lead bi-conical spindle whorl dating to the Medieval to Post Medieval period (c. AD 1200 - 1600). The spindle whorl is circular in plan and sub-triangular in cross-section, with sides that slope to a point at the perimeter, and a central, circular perforation. One face is decorated with a pattern of raised dots joined by lines. The other face may have been decorated with raised lines radiating from the central perforation but this face is too worn to fully make out. The object is well worn with a mid-grey patina.

Lead spindle whorls are difficult to date without archaeological context. Bi-conical spindle whorls with raised geometric designs can usually, however, be dated to the Medieval period. Similar examples on the database include: LANCUM-5E0386 and SWYOR-6A5C7C.

The overall dimensions are as follows: object is 26.83mm in diameter, 11.35mm in thickness and 33.87g in weight.
