Copper alloy annular brooch. Circular frame, probably of pressed or stamped metal, with paired lugs behind the band and an opposed lug opposite, interpreted as the seat and catch plate stub for a pin, both added as separate components and presumably brazed in place. About twenty-three small [diameter 1.9mm] hemispherical settings are symmetrically distributed around the band, and are interpreted as for paste settings. This contrasts with the provision of collets for inset rounded stones, a more usual medieval provision where an annular band was to be enhanced. The small round form may also imply facetted stones, which again are a post-medieval feature. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1650-1850
