Ceramic sherd of probably Iron Age date, possibly early Roman. The sherd is a medium fired reduced black fabric with lightly burnished bu not slipped exterior and interior. It has abundent poorly sorted angular white quartz temper up to 1.5mm and occasional rounded grog and probably iron stone pellets up to 1mm; there is also very occasional irregularly shaped chalk or limestone inclusions up to 1.5mm.
The sherd is part of the side wall with a distinct carination at one corner where it may be turning into the base. The sides are decorated with two pairs of cordens, each 4.6mm wide, narrow raised bands with indented lines above, below and between. One pair is adjacent to the carination, one near the top edge. The two pairs are 23mm apart. It is 41.1g. Too little survives to estimate the diameter of the base or body but it appears to be from a large vessel and the smoothing on the inside suggests a bowl rather than a jar.
The good firing and decoration suggests a late Iron Age to early Roman date.
