BROOCH

Unique ID: SF-E11DD4

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

A complete copper-alloy mid to late Anglo-Saxon openwork disc brooch. This brooch is flat and circular, measuring 28mm in diameter. It has four evenly spaced roughly triangular openwork holes, which form a cross shape within the circular border. There are traces of a groove running along the centre of the front of the circular border, but no other incised decoration can be seen.

On the reverse there is a complete integral pin loop, and opposite this a complete integral catch plate. There are slight traces of iron corrosion between the pin loop and catch plate which are likely to be the remains of an iron pin. The brooch is in good condition with a dark /olive green patina, this is missing in places revealing a reddish brown copper-alloy beneath it.

Cross-shaped brooches are well known from the middle and late Anglo-Saxon period (although compare also WILT-DB9737). Good parallels for this brooch can be found at SF-E37553, NMS-131EE7 and NMS-E23130. It seems likely that its date will centre on the 9th century AD.
