A fragment of Roman (AD 43-70) copper alloy Hod Hill brooch, consisting of the head and part of the upper bow only.
The wings span 15.3mm and have a central slot for the pin. They curl forwards to hold the axis bar, which remains in the form of iron corrosion (visible at either end of the wings and to the front, aorund the slot). One of the wings is rather shorter than the other (7.7mm to 6.0mm)
The head is rectangular in shape with a waisted section below (5.2mm wide), connecting itto the upper bow. The upper bow is decorated with three horizontal raised ribs (connected by narrower wasited sections) widest beneath the head (8.5mm, then 6.0mm, 5.7mm). The reverse is flat. The break below the shortest rib is old.
The object measures 16.7mm in length, 15.3mm in max.width and weighs 1.54g.

Notes:

In "Late Iron Age and Roman Brooches", Worrell (1998, p9) notes that Hod Hill brooches are closely related to Aucissa brooches from which they probably developed. They occur widely on the continent, particularly in Gaul and the Rhineland (ibid.). The main centre of production was probably Gaul, but some were probably made in Britain (ibid.). They are often associated with military sites and probably introduced to Britain by the Roman army, although they are also found on non-military sites (ibid.). Hod Hill brooches are known from post-conquest depositions and the type is better known on the continent. Bayley & Butcher (2004, p.153) suggest Hod Hill brooches went out of use c.70 AD.
