A complete and worn Medieval to post-Medieval copper-alloy square uniface coin-weight for a French 'ecu au soleil' (c. 1475-c. 1654).
The weight has a raised heraldic shield charged with a sun with eight wavy arms or streams below an open bifoliate crown. The sun in shield motif, perhaps alluding to the sun with streams badge of Edward IV (second reign 1470-1483), was used to check the French 'ecu au soleil'which was issued from 1475, and in 1525 was valued at four English shillings.
Length: 13.8mm; width: 13.0mm; thickness: 1.0mm. Weight: 1.06g. (16.36 grains).
This is probably an English coin-weight for a French half ecu au soleil. This denomination was issued between 1475-1654. It is well under weight, the weight for a full ecu being approximately 3.38-3.50g. (Withers and Withers, 1995: pp. 39, 70).
