Roman copper alloy 'Dolphin' bow brooch, 37mm long, 20mm wide and 12mm thick with a weight of 10.36g.

The brooch is incomplete, being unfinished and possibly a failed casting. It has open semi-circular cross sectioned wings sitting behind a circular cross sectioned tapering bow with rounded stepped foot. It has a sub rectangular catchplate with turned end which is half the length of the bow. It has a slight casting seam running the length of the front of the bow, with a more pronounced section in the centre. It has an extensive rough seam/'plate' of bronze on its reverse side which fills the space between wings and catch plate when viewed from the side. There is also a wide seam/spill at the base of the wings. Surrounding the large 'plate' on each side is a brownish substance which may be part of the mould?

As an unfinished brooch it is missing its spring and pin and is of great interest, being clear evidence of brooch manufacture in the area.

Notes:

The find spot is part of a large scatter of ceramic material and metalwork, which has been identified as a villa.
