Copper alloy brooch fragment. Cast lower bow and foot from a cruciform brooch, comprising a straight-sided plain upper part, slightly tapered from top to bottom; a step marked by a plain moulding; above a horse head terminal with nostrils represented by a rounded terminal knop. The horse head has a keeled profile with eyes set to either side. The back of the brooch is lightly hollowed, and the stub of a catch plate projects from behind the plain upper part of the fragment. The cruciform brooch was part of the 'national costume' worn by adult Anglian women, and its discovery probably indicates the disturbance of an Early Anglo-Saxon grave. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 500-600

Length: 49.4mm, Width: 11.1mm, Thickness (clear of catch plate): 4.6mm, Weight: 7.52gms

Class: Cruciform
