BOW BROOCH

Unique ID: SF-53DBDE

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete cast copper-alloy fragment originating from a bow brooch of Roman date, probably c. 43-125 AD. The fragment consists the lower bow, foot and catchplate only-the rest of the object missing in an old break. The bow itself is decorated with three raised vertical ribs, but is otherwise plain. The catchplate is triangular in plan and flattened, its back edge curved to accommodate the pin. Preserved in rather poor condition, it survives to a length of 24.21mm, 4.07mm wide at the midpoint of the bow by 9.11mm thick between the bow and catchplate. It weighs 2.11g. Due to its fragmentary condition, the exact type of this brooch can not be ascertained.
