Cast copper alloy Roman trumpet brooch fragment dating from c. AD75-175.

Only the head and part of the bow of the brooch survive. The front part of the bow, foot, spring and pin are missing. The bow has a circular cross section and is broken just next to the for this brooch type typical moulded acanthus leaf-and-reel-decoration which sits at the apex of the bow. Below the trumpet-shaped head which gives this brooch type its name, is the hinge mechanism that attached the pin to the brooch. This trumpet brooch did not have a sprung but a hinged mechanism with the two tubular mouldings and the axis bar still surviving inside. The pin is broken off. The surface of the brooch is very worn.
