Fragment of a post medieval copper alloy Spanish Netherlands escalin (half testoon) of Philip IV (1621-1665). The obverse has a rampant lion with a sword and shield and the legend P[HIL IIII D.G.HISP ET.] INDIAR.REX. The reverse has the arms of Spain and the legend [ARCHID AVS] DVX BVRG BRA [Zc]. The date appears either side of the central arms but only the first part (16) survives. It is possible that this is a contemporary forgery that would originally have been silvered. Only half of the coin survives, but a circular hole punched through suggesting that it have been reused possibly as a weight.
Diameter: 29.6mm; internal diameter of perforation: 4.1mm; weight: 2.2g
