A gilded copper alloy bird (probably an eagle) mounted on a long shank probably dating to the medieval period c AD 1250-1500. The eagle has an extended neck leading into the body of the bird which is thin and flat. There are wings on either side which are separated slightly from the body and a flaring tail. Beneath the body, the bird is standing on two separate legs with the claws of the feet gripping an oval knop. The knop narrows before flaring to form a flat plate which is on top of a long shank which gradually narrows towards its tip. The tip of the shank is missing. The shank is circular in cross section. The bird is decorated all over with incised zigzag lines to represent feathers. The whole object was gilded.
The extent of the gilding and the design of the bird suggests a medieval date; compare NLM-489141. The mount weighs 26.16g and measures 82.38mm in height, the bird is 33.57mm in length and 24.33mm in width. The bird on its knop is 46.3mm in height and its body is c 3.45mm in thickness.
