An antler whittle tang knife handle of uncertain date, probably Medieval to Modern. The handle is a cracked tube of antler, with the burr visible at one end; this end has been sawn flat. There is a triangular hole for the tang in the solid end. The other end is hollow and the walls of the tube have been carved so they taper internally and externally. Length 114.58mm, diameter 25.88mm, weight 63.71g.
Whittle tang handles were the most common form of Medieval knife handle until the 15th century, but they are also used today, and there are modern knifes being made with antler handles. Compare for example SUR-ECB54C and LON-4A5BA1.
