An incomplete, copper-alloy headstud brooch of Roman date, c.AD 75 - 200 in two parts. The head of the brooch comprises rectangular wings the reverse of which acts as a double lug hinge mechanism. The terminal fragment of the hinged pin remains attached to the axis bar and is D-shaped in plan and with approximately two-thirds of the shaft surviving beyond. The wings are undecorated but divided from the bow by a raised lateral rib. An integral, globular headstud with a raised central boss is evident at the base of the bow, it retains a small area of blue enamel. The bow is D-shaped in section and extends behind the head to the foot. A catchplate remains in situ and most of the upturned edge is still present. The brooch is broken cleanly along the bow.
The copper alloy has a pale green patina throughout. The brooch is c.45.0mm long, 14.5 mm wide at the wings, 5.5mm thick at the head and weighs 8.6g.
Similar examples are illustrated in Hattatt, p.333, fig.192 and are dated to the 2nd Century AD.
