A fragment of a copper-alloy small-long brooch of Early-Medieval date, c.AD 400-600.
The brooch consists of an incomplete head. The bow and foot have been lost to a worn break. The head consists of a rectangular central panel marked out by incised grooves, the top and two sides of which attach to flat projections. The projections are semi-circular, attaching to the central panel at thinner necks formed by C shaped cutouts. The outer edges are fragmentary with several small breaks. The head terminates in a worn break across its body, level with where the base of the side projections meet the central panel. On the underside of the head are the remains of a spring mechanism consisting only of a fragmentary integral central lug. The pin, axis bar, and spring have been lost, although traces of iron corrosion are visible where the spring would have been. The brooch is undecorated except for the incised lines that demarcate the edges of the central panel.
The metal is green in colour and worn. The brooch is 21.5mm in length, 35.9mm in width, 5.7mm thick, and weighs 6.5g.
