BUCKLE

Unique ID: SF-97A081

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete cast copper-alloy buckle and partial plate dating to the Medieval period, c. 1300-1450. The pin and rear half of the plate are missing in old breaks, but otherwise the object is preserved complete. The frame is kidney shaped in plan, with an indented front edge and curving sides that splay outwards to meet with an integral offset strap bar. Wrapped around the latter are the 'U' shaped remains of the original plate, broken in two laterally and with its rear portion missing. Substantial remains of gilding on the upper surface of the buckle implies that its entire upper surface was once decorated in this way. Preserved in rather poor condition with a coarse reddish brown patina, the buckle frame measures 18.81mm long by 34.98mm wide, 2.06mm thick at the midpoint of the frame and weighs 5.66g. Compare Whitehead no. 119 for the frame.
