A post-medieval silver pendant with heart shaped raised area at front and engraved design, possibly featuring lettering, on the back. The object is similar to HAMP-C12D91 NMGW-221F3A andLANCUM-36CDF9 but of reduced dimensions and not articulated in any fashion.
The object is hollow bodied and probably silver gilt, the raised heart-shaped area indented possibly by action in the soil. This heart is surrounded by a 'woven' band that completely encircles it. The backplate appears to have originally had around 9-10 rounded protrusions, forming an uneven halo. Discussions of similar objects to this one on the database imply that the overall shape relates the the symbol of the Sacred Heart, a Christian symbol representing the heart of the resurrected body of the Christ and his love for mankind.
The plate is also incised on the back with a crude foliate style enclosure within which is an arrangement of lines that may form lettering, possibly CR (or Charles Royal). This would possibly connect the locket to Royalist and Catholic sympathies in the 17th century. Examples of other similar heart-shaped pendants appear to have 'I H C' on the reverse for IH[VS] C[HRISTVS] (Jesus Christ). See: LANCUM-34C0AC and LANCUM-3C7098
Suspension ring outer diameter:-6.5mm. thickness:-1mm
Notes:
As the object is over 300 years old and consists of more than 10% silver, it falls under the terms of the Treasure Act (1996). Similar examples cited in the text of this record can probably be considered as a precedent for this conclusion.
