A complete copper alloy Half Crown of James II (AD 1685-1688). Gun money. Crown with cross sceptre reverse with value XXX above. Mint of Dublin or Limerick. AD 1690

Diameter: 29.23mm, Thickness: 2.27mm, Weight: 8.8g.

These were official tokens issued in Ireland when James II was attempting to recover the English throne and were ultimately intended to be exchanged for silver coins of equivalent value. They were made from old cannons, bells and scrap metal. James failed in his attempt and the coins were never exchanged.
