Fragment of a cast copper alloy Roman South-western T-shaped brooch. Only the end of the bow and the foot of the brooch remain with the lower section of the integral catchplate at the back, broken at the point at which the metal would have been folded over to hold the pin. The front of the brooch has four longitudinal or vertical ribs alternating with grooves, two on either side of a central groove containing transverse or horizontal mouldings making the pattern look cross-ribbed rather than a zig-zag pattern.
Bayley & Butcher (2004) illustrate a hinged T-shaped brooch with longitudinal ribs and grooves and transverse mouldings on page 94, fig.74, no.223, which is dated from the mid first century AD onwards.
Local comparanda include an example of a hinged T-shaped brooch with similar decoration and profile from the excavations at Carvossa, Probus, identified by Butcher in Carlyon, CAJ No.26, 1987, p.122, fig.7, no.18, which is dated from c.AD 75-125.
But the closest parallel of a hinged T-shaped brooch with similar mouldings and decoration can be found in the assemblage from Nornour on the Isles of Scilly, illustrated in Butcher (2016) on page 31, fig.36, no.64, which is classified as being unparalleled and a South-western variant.
