Cast copper alloy spectacle buckle with rounded ends and trefoil sides with a narrowed strap bar delineated with a groove on either side of bar where it meets the frame. The buckle is abraded but there are traces of moulded decoration on the upper face at the outer edge of each loop. Whitehead (1996) illustrates a very similar example on p.70, no.441. On p.61 he states that buckles of this type may have had folded sheet metal buckle plates with a single upstanding stud in the end, a type which has been widely found in contexts dating from 1650 to 1700. Generally he dates this type of buckle from 1600 to 1720.
