MOUNT

Unique ID: SUR-2D7957

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A gilded, circular, cast copper alloy Post Medieval mount in the form of a lion's face, 40.4mm in diameter. The general style of the lion's face is neo classical in form, with the features such as eyes snout and whiskers being finely defined. Striated textures are used to accentuate the nose and cheeks. The rim of the boss is decorated with a narrow etched border of foliate forms over a field of narrow perpendicular lines. The reverse is concave, with three stumps for fixing lugs spaced equidistant around the rim.

Possibly a harness boss on the basis of size and shape; however it is also similar to examples of 17th/18th century furniture mounts.

Notes:

No exact parallels are available on the database, however the general style and method of manufacture suggest a late 17th or perhaps more likely 18th century date.
