A small copper alloy (brass) Post Medieval circular pan or trade weight of 26.14g (0.92 oz or 403.4gn). The weight has a wide and prominent upstanding rim, suggesting it derives from a nested set and a central pit may indicate manufacture on a lathe. The upper surface within the rim has a central circle and is inscribed over the top of this with a letter A, a sword (the city of London guildhall mark), a crowned G (the royal cypher for King George I to IV) and an ewer for the London Founders Company, used to demonstrate adherence to standards. The letter A indicates that in this case it is to the Averdepois system (a pound of 16 oz). A large cross has been deeply scored into the upper surface. The arrangement of the marks, with the A on the left and the crowned G on the right indicates a date in the reign of George III or George IV. London, 1760-1826.
