Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 4c, Plate 46-47, AD c. 50-200). The copper alloy brooch has semi-cylindrical wings with perforated wing caps. The wings are decorated with a vertical ridge at the terminal, with fine oblique ribbing. The axis bar and spring are copper alloy with the spring forming six coils, the pin is missing. At the centre of the upper edge of the wings/bow head there is a hook supporting a chord. The bowhead is hump-like in profile with a moulding on either side. The head is decorated with a V-shaped groove which tapers down the bow and has horizontal ribbing within it. This decoration stops above the mid point of the bow. The bow is semi-circular in section and tapers to a bulbous foot with two transverse collars. On the reverse there is a solid catchplate which reaches above the mid point. The exterior edge of the catch element of the catchplate is decorated with double-stranded obliquely angled grooves forming a side-on chevron with a horizontal double-stranded groove in the centre of the chevron.

The surface of the brooch has a mid brown patina.

It measures 56.44mm in length, 17.44mm in width, and weighs 14.07g.

The brooch is a Polden Hill type, Bayley and Butcher (2004:160) comment that the distribution of Polden Hill brooches are concentrated in the West Midlands. Mackreth classifies this type as Group 4c dating to AD c. 50 to 200. A very similar example is illustrated in Mackretrh, Plate 46, No. 1939.
