An incomplete copper-alloy strap end of Early-Medieval date, c.AD 750 - 950. The strap end is of Thomas' Class A, Type 1 with zoomorphic terminal and Trewhiddle style decoration. The strap end is sub-ovate in shape with a zoomorphic terminal at the closed end and an open split terminal at the attachment end. The upper plate of the attachment retains two rivet holes, though one is broken, while the lower plate has been lost to a worn break.

The zoomorphic terminal is in the form of a forward facing animal head. The decoration is too worn to be adequately determined though semi-circular eyes to either side of the head can be seen below crescentic ears. The central panel bears Trewhiddle style decoration though again too worn to determine in detail. Traces of niello are retained within the recessed areas of the design. The reverse is flat and undecorated.

The metal has a dark brown patina and is worn. The strap end is 39.4mm long, 14.9mm wide, 3.5mm thick and weighs 5.8g.

Late Anglo Saxon and Viking strap ends have been classified into several types by Thomas with this example fitting into Thomas' Class A, Type 1 dating broadly from the 8th to 9th centuries. Strap ends are a common Early-Medieval find though this type is thought to be particularly typical of the 9th century due to its representation within coin hoards as well as its stylistically diagnostic features.
