An incomplete Late Iron Age/ early Roman copper alloy brooch, probably dating from AD 25-75. A hinged strip bow brooch, almost complete, with some damage to its head and missing its axis bar and pin. The head of the brooch consists of a rectangular sheet of copper alloy rolled under itself to form the wings for a lost axis bar. A rectangular slot has been cut into the reverse of the head to accommodate a hinged pin, also lost, and with the left wing damaged. The bow tapers into a pointed foot with a sub-rectangular, unperforated catchplate projecting from the reverse. The upper bow is decorated with a recessed channel running down either edge containing an incised zig-zag pattern, with a double stranded incised transverse collar dividing the upper and lower bow, the latter being plain. The pin rest curves to the right.

Length: 62.60mm; width at the head: 14.90mm; weight: 3.51g.

Ref. Bayley & Butcher (2004: fig. 119) illustrate comparable examples, with further parallels excavated in Roman contexts at Dorchester are published by Woodward et al. (1993: fig. 61, nos. 32, 35-36). It also resembles Mackreth (2011, 103), no. 6770.
