Medieval or Post Medieval (12th to 17th century) sword pommel or guard, possibly: The pommel/guard is made from cast copper alloy which is sub-oval in section with truncated terminals. The base is concave with a fragment of iron tang protruding from a perforation in the centre. The side faces has a central vertical, rectangular groove with a ridge either side which continues across the upper face. One side terminal has an asymmetrical protrusion which is obliquely angled and on one face has three wavy grooves, with two low-relief pellets below. The opposite face has two slight horizontal ridges with a concave space between. The upper face has the iron tang remaining, but not protruding. There is a deep curved groove on side side, and at the side with the protrusion there is a wider groove.

The surface of the pommel/guard has an overall mid brown patina which is not well-developed revealing, in patches, a red copper corrosion. There are trace os a dark green patina which appears to site beneath the mid brown surface.

The pommel measures 28.79mm tall, 49.71mm wide, 20.88mm thick and weighs 118.05g.

A comparison for this pommel/guard cannot be found, but the surface condition suggests a Medieval or Post Medieval date rather than Early Meideval. FAKL-894215 is a simplified version which has a similar mass. WILT-D407A6 demonstrates an asymmetrical example with vaguely similar style decoration.
