The front plate from a copper alloy scabbard chape of medieval to Post Medieval date, about AD 1450 - 1600. It is shield shaped with a slightly concave upper edge and sides tapering gradually to a rounded point with a small, hemispherical knop in the centre. The edges and rounded point are folded over at a ninety degree angle to fit over the leather scabbard. The upper edge of the chape is decorated with a series of small, U shaped, transverse grooves (piecrust). Immediately beneath this decoration is a single, groove across the face of the chape. The chape is further decorated with a perforation in the shape of a long cross, the short arms of which are rounded at the ends. The chape has a smooth, dark green patina. It is 35.3mm long, 26.1mm wide and 4.8mm thick. It weighs 8g.
