An incomplete probable lead badge, of probable Medieval date, about AD 1200 - 1500. The object is sub-oblong in shape, tapering very slightly. There is a row of small pellets running parallel with the wider bottom edge and a vertical pattern suggesting the folds of a robe, suggested by vertical wide grooves and ridges. There are also fine lines running horizontally across alternate of the vertical straipes, producing an effect similar to a wicker basket. Centrally located at the top there are ten pellets in the shape of a flower. The top right corner has detached, but is present. On the reverse there is a near central longitudinal casting seam, and a possible attachment point for the pin, now missing. The object has a uniform pale grey patina. It is 22.2mm long, 16.8mm wide and 2mm thick. It weighs 3.1g. It is not clear which edges are broken and which are original.
This object is probably part of a secular badge or a pilgrim badge. A close parallel has not been found, but the folds of cloth seemingly depicted are similar to examples on page 197 of Spencer (1998), though of course, the robe could belong to one of many saints or other characters. It is also possible that this is part of a Post medieval lead toy such as a lead lady.
