A complete post-medieval copper-alloy scabbard chape, probably for a dagger. The chape is tongue shaped, ie with sides that are gradually converging from the top to the triangular base with a projecting angular knop at the lower point. It is C-shaped in section, hollow on the reverse (apart from the knop) with thin convex curved sides and slightly convex front. The upper edge is formed into three triangular points, the central one broader. It is decorated with two transverse ribs, one c11mm from the top, the other c11mm from the bottom (excluding the knop). The front appears to have been lacquered, possibly with a mixture of linseed oil and soot.
Length 54.5mm; width 24.9; thickness/curvature 5.2mm; weight 7.72g.
De Reuck (1991: np) includes a very similar, identically sized chape, and dates such chapes to the 16th century.
