An incomplete cast silver shoe buckle dating to the Modern period, c 1720-1790. The buckle frame itself is rectangular in plan, curves slightly in profile and is broadly 'D' shaped in section, its upper surface decorated with scrolled foliate motifs set against a stippled recessed background. At each end of the buckle is a thickened section with an internal circular aperture that represents where the original internal iron spindle was set (now missing due to corrosion). The underside of the buckle is plain and featureless except for two rather worn stamped maker's marks on opposite sides of the frame-consisting the letters 'GG' within a rectangular cartouche. Preserved in good condition with some rust stains around the original location of the spindle, it measures 32.65mm in length, 28.53mm wide, 3.5mm between the spindle and frame, and weighs 6.99g.
The identity of 'GG' is unknown, but this could be the mark for George Gray of London, who appears to have been working in the 1780's and 1790's.
