Object type certainty: Certain

An incomplete late Saxon copper alloy mount, probably dating to the 11th century. The mount is rectangular in plan and is decorated with an openwork zoomorphic panel probably following the Urnes style. The panel depicts a beast with slender neck, head and snout, standing in profile to the left. The beast is slim and highly stylised, set against a tight interwoven pattern of strands which probable emanate from the beasts limbs and tail. The mount has a backplate surviving, along with a copper alloy rivet in each corner of the frame. Two integral but incomplete knops extend from the lower edge of the mount.

Other rectangular openwork mounts, in copper alloy and with 11th-century Urnes-style relief decoration, are recorded on the PAS database at NMS-02A7E0, SOMDOR-ED0DC0 and ESS-7E3A71. These rectangular mounts also bear some relationship to a series of 11th-century flat oval openwork mounts (e.g. HAMP-B06557, HAMP-BF6492, BH-FD11A0 and SUR-29B2E1).
