An Early Medieval copper alloy strap end of Thomas Class A, Type 1, dating from AD 750 - 950. The strap end has convex sides and a split attachment end. There is a palmette motif at the attachment end, and two empty circular rivet holes. The main body of the strap end is decorated with a panel decorated with niello. The design is a Trewhiddle style animal, with its speckled body facing the closed end, but its head bent backwards under its forelimb, to look towards the attachment end. The zoomorphic panel has a concave side to accommodate the palmette. The closed end has a zoomorphic terminal. The reverse is plain. 35.5mm long, 11.1mm wide and 4mm thick. 5.3g.
