A medieval (1350-1550) copper-alloy book mount of Howsam type B.1.2, comprising a central hemispherical boss with four equidistant projecting flat trefoils, each with a circular perforation for a rivet (two are filled with iron corrosion and a third contains traces, suggesting the rivet would have been made of iron). The central boss is flanked by a raised rim around its base. The trefoil terminals have a central triangular projection with an outwardly curving projection to either side. The piercings measure c.2.5mm in diameter.
To the reverse the trefoils are flat and centre is concave, measuring c.9.5mm in depth. The object is a greeny-grey in colour with all-over light pitting to the surface. It measures 45.9x45.8mm with a maximum depth of 14.7mm, and weighs 29.58g.
Notes:
Ottaway and Rogers (2002) illustrate a similar mount, No. 12928, which is described as a protective decorative book mount; conical or domed shapes are particularly characteristic of book mounts. The mount probably dates to the late medieval to early post-medieval period. Egan (1998) also illustrates a similar mount, No. 926, and dates it to the second half of the 14th century.
