Seven Roman ceramic sherds from Black Burnished ware (BB1, three definitely from Wareham/Poole Harbour, Dorset, four possibly South West variant) vessels, dating c. AD 43 - 410. Five are body sherds, one from the everted neck of a closed vessel (jar); two are rim sherds probably from flared rims of closed vessels with a convex curved upper surface and slight thickening on the outer side at the top edge, not enough to be called a rolled or beaded edge. A relatively fine grained, hard black - dark grey fabric throughout, with evidence of blacker slip and burnishing on the exterior and on both the interior and exterior surface of the rim sherds, worn away in places. Moderate sub-rounded to sub-angular translucent quartz inclusions, <1.5mm, occasional white angular feldspar inclusions most <1mm and some <2.5mm, and rare orange/brown iron stone, <1.5mm.
All are too small to estimate the diameter or the form. All are abraded, some highly. Total weight: 40.44g.
