An incomplete copper-alloy crossbow brooch of Roman date, c.AD 200-300. The brooch has tubular crossbar wings with closed ends, although one end is fragmented, exposing the central axis bar fitted within the wings. The reverse of the wings have a central slot allowing a pin to be looped around the bar. The pin remains and has a circular section, tapering to a worn point. A central three-tiered knop protrudes upwards from the top of the axis bar. The axis bar meets the bow at a raised rectangular block. From this a D-sectioned bow extends with a steep C-shaped curve before bending straight down forming a P-shaped profile. The lower bow is in the form of an open sided tube, which acts as a catchplate for the pin. The catchplate terminates at the base in a worn break. The brooch is undecorated.
The metal has a mid-green patina and is worn. The brooch is 57.2mm long, 27.5mm wide at the wings, 5.0mm wide at the bow, 21.7mm thick from the bow to the pin, 3.7mm thick at the bow, and weighs 11.7g.
Parallels are illustrated in Hattatt (2000), p.368, fig.227, dated to the 3rd century AD. Similar brooches have been recorded on the database as ASHM-B5DA31, DUR-888FEF, WILT-CA9F6A.
