Discussion
Two other gold 'memorial' finger rings bearing the stamp RM are known. The first, from Wellington, Herefordshire (HESH-7FE358; 2005 T567) commemorates an individual with the initials MK, but is not dated. The second, from Moreton, Essex (LON-FB29D6; 2012 T75) commemorates an individual with the initials EH and bears the date 1677. The style of inscription on both rings as per the present ring, being executed in lower case italic.
While the maker's mark 'RM' is not recorded in the standard works such as Grimwade and Jackson (comments from J. Rudoe's report on 2005 T567), the date of 1677 seen on the ring from Moreton suggests that the present ring is likely to be of late 17th century date, should 'RM' be the same maker.
Conclusion
As the finger-ring is greater than 300 years old and is more than 10% gold it fulfills the requirements of the Treasure Act 1996
