Object type certainty: Certain

Medieval seal matrix, of Medieval date (c. 1300 - c.1400 AD). The copper alloy seal matrix has a oval die, with a tapering handle. The handle has a hexagonal cross section, and terminates with an incomplete sub-oval suspension loop, which has a collar beneath. There are no marks on either of the six sides to aid orientation during use.

The device depicts a rabbit or a hare facing left with pointed ears.

The inscription is set outside an incomplete linear border, and is illegible.

The surface of the matrix has an incomplete dark green coloured patina.

The matrix measures 14.15mm wide at the die, 18.93mm long and weighs 3.81g.

The seal matrix dates to the Medieval period, probably 14th century. After c. 1300 smaller impersonal circular-based seal matrices are more common (Harvey and McGuinness; 1996).
