Copper alloy crucifix. A probably die-stamped crucifix with the stub of a suspension loop. The cross has a plain border and bears the draped body of Christ crucified in low relief, as are all features; a skull and crossbones at the foot indicates Golgotha [place of the skull], the Biblical name for Calvary. On the back the word MISSION extends along the cross-bar. At one end of the word is a hammer, and at the other pliers; a crown of thorns is set on the upper beam. The Instruments of The Passion were the particular subject of Catholic devotion, so this object is likely to date to after Catholic Emancipation (1829), which legalised the practice of that faith in Britain. Many Irishmen worked in Lincolnshire as migrant labourers in agriculture and industry, and most were Roman Catholic. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1830-1900

Height: 39.7mm, Width: 22.5mm, Thickness: 1.5mm, Weight: 2.60gms
