An incomplete Roman copper-alloy brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill type of The Western Group Mackreth 2011, Chapter 3, Part 3, CD PH 5.b1. dating to the period AD 75--175. Only the pin is missing. The semi-cylindrical open wings are decorated at the front with transverse ridges/mouldings. The wings have an integral flat end-cap. The end-cap is pierced for the axis bar around which is the coiled spring. The front of the bow is decorated with a central longitudinal ridge which is flanked on either side by a shallow ridge. The lower section of the bow is plain and undecorated and tapers to a rounded point. At the foot of the brooch on the reverse is the catchplate, damaged but complete. The catchplate is openwork with two geomtetric voids. Similar brooches have been published by Hattatt (Hattatt 1989: 301, fig. 160, refs: 382, 383, 901).
