A Medieval to Post-Medieval lead token, of Powell type 12, probably dating to c. AD 1500-1800. The token has been stamped unifacially, the stamped face quartered by a central equal armed cross or saltire, with three chevrons in each quarter, each fitting within the preceding chevron. The design extends to the edge of the token.

Dimensions: Diameter 17mm; weight 2.4g.

Lead tokens had a wide variety of uses and were made locally; they are therefore hard to date precisely and could be Medieval or Post Medieval in date. Powell (2012: 1) notes that highly standardised designs such as this were produced in very large numbers from the late 16th century. That this design can also be found on tokens bearing initials, see for example: BUC-89CE25 on this database, may also support a Post-Medieval date.

This record was initially left unfinished and further detail has been added based on the attached images.
