Incomplete medieval gilt copper alloy harness pendant dating to the period c. AD 1200 - 1400. Concavo-convex scallop shell shape, broken along one side and with a projecting neck at the apex terminating in a suspension loop set perpendicular to the body. The outer face is decorated with four curving engraved vertical lines and two curving transverse lines indicating the ridges and grooves in the shell.
Clark (1995, 67, fig.50, no.72) illustrates a very similar example and suggests that the design may have connections with contemporary pilgrimage imagery, which often features the scallop shell - the badge of St. James (ibid., 69).
