Post medieval lead seal of continental issuer, possible Hanseatic. Discoidal with a broken D-shaped loop projecting from one edge, now folded over. One face exhibits an eagle displayed, head facing left. The other face exhibits a garnished shield divided in two , one half exhibits two unidentified objects in saltire, the other side a three-legged cooking pot.
See Egan (1994, pp. 116 and 196, fig. 45) for seals of similar design, notably nos. 334 & 338, which are tentatively identified as Hanseatic issues. Several were discovered in an apparently English wreck off the coast of Norway, dated to the 1630s or 1640s.
LON-9485E4 is a very close parallel, and BH-060A30 also has a spread eagle and a tripod cooking vessel. Geoff Egan suggested in LON-9485E4 that they may be the seals of brass founders. Stuart Elton has identified the items in saltire as crossed spoons, and gives further examples attached to metalwork (www.bagseals.org; BSG.OS.00116).
Thanks to Paul Cannon for help with the identification of this seal.
