Post medieval copper alloy farthing token issued by Nicholas Shepherd of Saxmundham. Obv: NICHOLAS . SHEPHERD - The draper's arms Rev: IN . SAXMVNDHAM - S/NM Williamson 1967, 1097, no.288.
Farthing trade tokens were first issued in 1648 as a response to the shortage of small change, with halfpenny tokens being issued later. They were finally suppressed by Royal Authority in 1674.
