A Roman copper alloy zoomorphic plate brooch dating from AD 100-200. The brooch is in the form of a hen or cockerel. It is three dimensional and has a comb with three defined points, but its beak has broken off and there is no evidence for eye sockets. There is a small (old) break on the right hand side of its body. There are four longitudinal crescentic recessed cells on the back depicting feathers and would have once contained enamel. There are two (broken) small lugs to hold the now missing pin under the tail. Traces of the catch plate remain. It has a mid green patina.
Length: 26.8mm; width: 11.6mm; thickness: 3.8mm; weight: 4.74g.
