FINGER RING

Unique ID: NMS-C811CF

Object type certainty: Certain

Incomplete copper alloy finger ring of uncertain date (see discussion). It comprises a lenticular-sectioned strip of copper alloy 5.2mm in width coiled into one complete loop and two half loops, each terminating in a worn break. It has a smooth dark green patina with some pitting.

Coiled finger rings of this form first appear in the central European late Middle Bronze Age Tumulus culture (1600-1300 BC), however, coiled finger rings remained popular throughout the Iron Age and Roman periods through to the Early Medieval, with examples noted from Colchester (Crummy 1983: 48, no. 1758; unstratified) & Dorchester (Woodward et al. 1993: 120, no. 22; Late 1st/early 2nd century AD). Similar rings were also found during excavations at Meare Village (Coles 1987: 67, E18-19) in association with features of potential Iron Age date. The lack of diagnostic features on the present example combined with the unstratified nature of the find means that it it not possible to assign a close date range.
