An incomplete Roman copper-alloy Hod Hill brooch (c. AD 43-c. 70).

Part of the head, some of the bow, the pin and axis bar are missing.

The brooch is moulded at the front, flat at the rear and curved in side profile. The incomplete head would have been rolled forwards in order to form a hollow cylinder through which the axis bar would have fitted. At the centre of the head the rectangular slot would have accommodated the pin loop. In plan, the head narrows evenly towards the main body of the bow. This narrowed portion has two transverse parallel ridges. The bow has two vertical grooves or flutes, one at each side. An incomplete side lug projects from each side. Close to the break at the bottom there is a transverse ridge.

This brooch is reddish brown and the breaks are old and abraded.

Length: 18.4mm; width: 10.8mm; width at head: 9.8mm; thickness: 2.5mm. Weight: 1.87g
