Lead possible weight. Cast plano-convex weight with a central moulded and tapered aperture of diameter 5-4mm, appearing square on the convex side, which might imply the tip of a nail shank has been used as a former. Shrinkage lines on the flat side suggest the object was cast in an open mould. Patinated. The finder kindly suggests this to be an early medieval weight, but the hole would be an unusual feature and the mass does not respect contemporary units of measurement. The hole is also a little small to have accommodated a spindle, ruling out a function as a whorl. The mass does, though, equate to roughly one half an averdepois ounce. Suggested date: Unknown, Late Medieval to Post-Medieval, 1350-1700
