Roman brooch of Polden Hill variant: The copper alloy brooch has semi-cylindrical wings with perforated wing caps which support the copper alloy axis bar. Around the axis bar the spring is coiled twelve times with a chord across the top. The pin is missing.
The wings are decorated with three vertical ribs on each, with a circular cell. One cell is filled with a dark blue glass fitting which is decorated with a white, central, glass pellet. At the bow head there is an integral perforated lug which supports the chord. The bow head isn't hump-like as normally seen on Polden Hill brooches. The bow leads from the head and is sub-oval in section. The upper portion of the bow is decorated with two ridges on a long rectangular platform with rounded corners. Beneath this platform the bow expands in width and has a large oval cell with a miniature wing on each side. The miniature wing is a short circular stem terminating with a circular disc. Below this cell the brooch is broken, and not recently.
The surface of the brooch has an incomplete brown-green patina with some abrasion. Also there are traces of a blue coloured corrosion.
It measures 37.08mm in length, 32.85mm in width, and weighs 18.9g.
The brooch is a Polden Hill variant, and at the time of writing a comparison cannot be found. Dating to AD c. 50 to 400.
